Have a HAPPY Earth-Birthday Day!!

:) Happy Birthday to me!

:) Happy Birthday to me!

:) Happy Birthday too mmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.....

:) Happy Birthday to moi!! (that's a wee bit of french for Anjea LOL)

I have no idea why I'm soo bouncy and happy, but I am!

Do you know the Glen Campbell and Jack Nicholson also have a birthday today! We are all sooo cool!

Mini Rant - While I am tickled to share my birth date with a noble cause of Earth Day Recognition, I must stress I believe taking care of the earth is a daily goal and not to be just once day a year. So, if you are celebrating by not using paper/plastic bags today, make it a goal to do for the rest of the week--see if you make that goal for 30 days. While having a day to recognize ways to help the earth is wonderful, having awareness isn't enough---long term actions and change of habits are key! /end of mini rant

Now because I'm a giving kinda person (and I've seriously slacked off on my Manic Monday Offerings) and this is my 217th post and It's my 41 birthday and all......I'm having a give away! Mmmm...what to give away? I have gathered some fun little things into a surprise package.

So, if you want to win this Birthday Celebration, leave a comment and I'll pick a winner using a random number generator on April 30th. Is there a catch? Sure, it's my birthday and earth day---so share an earth day tip with your comment (a new link would be cool).

One picture to share this morning...it's what's for dinner...not tonite, I'm not cooking tonite-but for tomorrow's dinner---fish!

Hubby is wearing his UofTennessee stuff (it blinds the fish) and those are White Perch. He is very tickled, can you tell :D

Enjoy the day!

  1. Happy birthday!

I'm on the frugal train, so my tip is to re-use instead of throw things away. Egg cartons make good seed starter trays, or can be donated to schools for art projects. Yogurt and margarine containers are great for leftovers. The EPAs Earth Day Website has s'more ideas or any website or book about being frugal will provide lots more tips.

  2. Happy birthday! Sounds like it is already good to you!

I don't know if I have any earth shaking tips. Use cloth napkins instead of paper towels. Buy children's toys from consignment shops, yard sales or craigslist. Get rid of just about anything using freecycle.org instead of just throwing stuff in the trash.

  3. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU....HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU....(That's me singing and since I don't sing well, I won't finish the song. LOL

Anyway, enjoy the day, and may you get all your wishes today.

As for earthday, here is a great site to check out. http://tiny.cc/54d2E And here is another that lists 30 ways to go green. http://www.durhamearthday.org/tips.html

As for a personal way to go green, try these tips. Make fabric totes to take to the grocery store. You could even recycle old clothing to make the totes. They fold up easily, and are reusable. When cleaning try using cloth rags instead of paper towels, or those prepackaged wipes. A multipurpose cleaner and a bucket of water goes a long way and works on many surfaces.

Another good site for getting rid of stuff is Kijiji. I've had great luck using it.

  5. Happy birthday Toni!!

My tip: I use the reusable grocery bags. Yes, if you are a big shopper like me, it is quite expensive to get enough bags in one trip to cover your average grocery shopping trip. Buy a few bags each trip. You are still helping the environment by using the bags.

Bonus tip: Our state has deposits on its bottles and cans. I keep three trash cans in my front closet (don't need to use it for coats here in Hawaii!!). I line it with a kitchen bag and then separate plastic, glass, and aluminum in each bag. It saves time when going to the recycling truck to get back the money. I then save my receipts (they do not expire) and am saving up for a nice family outing.

  7. Happy Birthday Me Heartie, Hope the ol' ship sails for many years yet and that there's still plenty of treasure left in the ol' chest LOL

My tip: Don't throw old bedding, curtains etc away make Morsbags to limit the use of plastic bags. Visit www.morsbags.com to see what they're all about.

  8. Happy Birthday Toni or in Welsh - Penblwydd Hapus !!! Lol

I try and remember to re-use my carrier bags and I'm also a member of freecycle which keeps stuff from out of the landfill. I recycle all newspapers and cans and bottles too. If we all did a little bit it would make a big difference.

  9. Happy Birthday!

My tip: Travel mugs. Coffee shops don't like spending money on disposable cups, and I don't like throwing them away - so any day I don't get to stay long enough to drink all my coffee in its real glass cup, I bring my own. (yes, Starbuck's is recycleable, but that still takes energy, a quick wipe down is all my cup needs!)

  10. Happy Birthday!!! And many more! :)

Two Earth Day tips for you:
    1) Quilters -- check out Jill's blog (lifewithnaturegirl.blogspot.com) for a reusable snack bag and sandwich bag pattern. Perfect for Earth Day!
    2) Be kind to the earth by eating more plants and less animals. Have a meatless meal more often or cut back on the amount of meat. It makes a HUGE difference to the environment!

What great patterns!! Thanks for sharing!

  11. Happy birthday! While we all love bottled water it takes 100 years for these bottles to dissenerate. We kept a few bottles that I boil after each use but we drink our water from insulated cups, reusable of course. Let me know what night you are having fish. :D

  12. Happy birthday!

I want to say plant a tree, but that's completely impractical for me and many others. How about try growing some vegetables this summer? And if you really can't manage that, even some herbs on a window box. It saves food miles and packaging, if you normally buy them in the supermarket. And they taste fabulous.

  16. Happy Birthday!
I couldn't agree more that Earth Day should be everyday not just one day a year. I think raising children who are conscientious about the environment is a good tip. I'm fortunate my child is environmentally conscientious all on her own, we just continue to encourage these good habits. We do the usual earth friendly things reduce, reuse, recycle, shopping at thrift stores, carpooling/combining errands into one trip, etc. So now we're trying to use less plastic by sewing reusable snack bags, napkins and fabric shopping bags. We no longer use bottled water either. Next we need to get rid of juice boxes for snack. Today we used old newspapers to plant our herb seeds and marigold seeds because we didn't get around to it last week. My daughter also rode her bike because it was good for the earth and Earth Day. She rode around the drive way pretending she was riding to friends houses. It was very cute!
I hope you had a great birthday!

Thank you for your comment. It's nice to know others are trying to make the earth better through rising their kids with actions and awareness :)

  17. Happy Birthday to You :)

My tips to recycle just about everything...glass jars, aluminum cans, newspapers, junk mail, #1 & #2 plastics, cut apart plastic rings from bottle packs, use a coffee mug instead of a throw-away, plastic bags. I also look for products made from recycled materials like cards and paper.

  18. Happy Birthday....have seen many Univ. of Tenn. shirts around the daughters house. Its everywhere. My Earth day tip... I am changing out light bulbs...and planting small pot garden this year.DD and I also have gotten into the habit of turning down the heat.... on a timer of course at night.( when its colder of course) I am also thinking of getting myself a scooter when I get settled in Mississippi.... I think that will really save on gasoline...and can be fun to ride too!

  20. Happy Birthday! I remember all too well the first Earth Day, riding my bike to school instead of taking the bus. My tip is for quilters, you can reuse dryer sheets for applique, they make great facings for circles instead of regular interfacing.

    Great ideas! Thanks for sharing!

Put me in for the drawing, s'il vous plait! :D

Tip: Ride a bike, walk, or take public transportation whenever possible. Good exercise promotes healthy living and it decreases fuel usage and air pollution!
